Sometimes, heredity can cause the toes to contract in such a way that bony prominences form on the joints. Commonly referred to as hammertoes, these deformities can lead to painful calluses, corns, or even ulcerations. In addition to diagnosing hammertoes, podiatrists can teach patients how to select footwear that is best for their feet. In most cases, the complications associated with hammertoes can be alleviated through the employment of conservative treatment regimes. In some cases, though, hammertoes can be so severe that they require a surgical treatment. However, only your podiatrist can accurately assess your individual needs.
